In August 2010, MV Sun carried 492 refugee claimants to the British Columbia coast. Six were charged. Four of the six were Canadians. Nadarajah Mahendran and Thayakaran Markandu were among them. One of the Sri Lankans still at large was Sathyapavan Aseervatham2. Alleged Tamil Genocide Claim used by Tamil refugees seeking protection under Canadian Government-Assisted Refugee (GAR) program at a cost of CAD $25 million6!
In keeping with Canada’s humanitarian tradition and international obligations, the Government of Canada provides assistance to thousands of such displaced persons every year through GAR program. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are able to provide additional opportunities for refugees living abroad to find protection and build a new life in Canada through the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) program.
Hewage claims “at para 28 their primary intention is to influence Canada’s asylum policy to bring their relatives living in the South part of Sri Lanka and other countries.”
