The existence of an undivided Sri Lanka is and has been under threat for a long time. The latest attempt is to characterize Sri Lanka as a nation that has conducted genocide against the Tamil people.
The real reason for the current genocide myth is really the Economy of Tamil Genocide. The following diagram may help understand how the current situation where the slogan of Tamil Genocide may be used as a practical tool to re-energize the Economic aspect of the of Tamil Genocide myth.
Canadian Tamils who are on refugee status are facing difficulties in justifying the reason for refugee status due to the ending of violence. This is a main cause for them to find a new reason or to fabricate one.
Current Situation
Due to the 30 year terrorist war in Sri Lanka, an eco-system was created by the diaspora world-wide. It was built around a cycle of violence. With the end of the war in 2009, this cycle has been broken. The UNHCR refugee claimants statistics show that during the peak periods of the War, there has been over 20,000 Sri Lankan refugee claims in Canada a year. This number has drastically decreased since 2009 down to less than 3,000 in the year 2019. The decrease in the number of refugees in Canada is a threat to the Economy of Tamil Eelam. Therefore the new initiative is to create a new reason so that the refugee influx can continue.
By repeating the myth, their plan is to make it a truth in the minds of Ontarians and the Ontario and federal politicians.
All this buzz generated around Alleged Tamil Genocide Myth has become a new reason for fund raising and re-energizing the Economy of Tamil Genocide.
